It is true that bodyweight exercises can be more productive than ‘modern’ weight training due to the fact that 90% of the people in the average commercial gym are a complete train wreck. Our conception of what weight training consists of is so out of whack it’s laughable. The TRX is a good system though, I use it myself in addition to weights and kettlebells.
It’s about progression: The trainee who never adds weight to the bar will never increase the difficulty on bodyweight movements, either. If one isn’t interested in gaining a lot of muscular mass, exercise choice becomes a matter of personal preference. However, if contractile-muscular weight gain, (& the strength that comes with it), is a goal, one must lift heavy on the ‘big’ lifts, especially the barbell squat.
