Sandbag Training - My Secret Weapon

Not Josh, but Zach Even-Esh, another friend we hung out with this weekendI just got back from a conference where I got to catch up with sandbag expert, Josh Henkin.

Here are some of the most common questions he’s asked about sandbag training:

Q: Why don’t you sell them prefilled with sand?

A: Very simply it would absolutely kill people in shipping costs. I remember one of the major reasons people didn’t want to buy kettlebells wasn’t the fact they didn’t believe they worked, they were just way too costly in delivery!

We want sandbags to be accessible to everyone and since you can go and get a 75 pound bag of sand at most hardware stores for $3 it didn’t seem right to do to our customers.

Q: What type of sand do you recommend using?

A: Some people are worried about the sand being toxic, however, if you use standard play sand everything should be ok. It is clean and the only time you will be handling it will be when you first are loading your sandbag.

Q: Can I use other stuff to fill my sandbag?

A: Yes, of course it will change the loading approximations that I have listed on the website. Things such as pea gravel and small decorative stone are highly recommended since they have good density so the weight will be similar but can actually be cleaner.

Stephen says:
Frankly, I prefer a mixture of pea gravel and sand.

Q: My sandbag doesn’t weigh what you said on the site, what gives?

A: All the weights listed on the website are loads I have achieved using the bags myself. There are factors that may influence how much weight you get yourself.

1. The material you use to load the bag, I have found different types of sand do weigh differently.

2. How much you load the filler bags, I usually recommend leaving an inch to inch and half from the top.
