National organization makes health a central theme at first day of meeting in Charleston
With a central theme of improving American fitness, the National Governors Association’s summer conference got under way Saturday as three snack-food barons gave themselves a pat on the back for working toward reducing obesity by making their products healthier.
Corporate leaders from the firms that bring America such products as Lucky Charms cereal and Pepsi and Coca-Cola soft drinks said their companies are part of the solution to the problem of the country’s ever-expanding waistline.
“It’s a corporate responsibility as well as a business imperative for us to address the health of America,” said Stephen Sanger, board chairman and chief executive officer of General Mills Inc., the large breakfast-foods maker.
Steven S. Reinemund, board chairman and chief executive officer of PepsiCo, said: “Health and wellness is one of the key strategies in our business today.”
And Donald Knauss, president of Coca-Cola North America, added: “We think we’re on the side of the angels, if you will. But it’s also in our economic self-interest.”

Sidebar: Did you know Maryland Governor Bob Ehrlich and I used to train together when he was at Princeton and I was at Duke? Bobby was influential in having me appointed to the Governor’s Fitness Council back when he was a state senator.
