Stemulite Question from a reader

With all due respect, you look like you’re about 50 lbs overweight. Do you take your own product, and if so, why isn’t it working better for you?

Hi, Bob -
Hold on, my friend.

You’re probably thinking of Dr. Summers, not me. (No offense, Dr. Summers.)

I weigh less than I did when I played corner at Duke University (while a Dean’s list Mechanical Engineering major, thank you very much) close to 30 years ago.

I’ll take the liberty of speaking for Dr. Summers here …

For years, he had debilitating arthritis in his neck that kept him from being physically active. He finally had an operation a few months ago and is recovering.

Also, it takes a lot of time to do the research on 50-plus patents. Some of us just have different priorities when it comes to working out and “looking good” (whatever your definition of “good” might be).

Here’s a question I ask trainers who seem a little too concerned about how low their body fat may or may not be:

steven_hawking“Do you think Steven Hawking could possibly learn enough to become an effective personal trainer?”

Or, look at it this way …

“If I were in some accident and couldn’t demonstrate exercises or work out myself, would I still be an effective personal trainer?”

“Hell, yes,” would be the appropriate answer.

Sometimes - sometimes - there’s a legitimate reason to separate the message and the messenger.

He may kill me (literally, he’s a martial arts champ), but when Men’s Fitness columnist Alwyn Cosgrove was recovering from his last bout with cancer, I could have whipped his butt.

Sure, he knew more than I did about self-defense (all I know is how to look fairly tough), but he was physically incapable of implementing what he knew.

Likewise, Dr. Summers knew Stemulite would help him in his weight training. He just wasn’t allowed to lift weights.

Good answer, Stephen. As you clearly stated, sometimes there are extenuating circumstances which effectively hide a person’s visual (not actual) credibility.
