These patents indicate some experience with engineering or tinkering with devices, primarily stents & related devices.
They do not indicate in any way that he has any knowledge or experience or background in nutrition, chemistry, or anything related to the product being critically examined.
The tone of the posters comes from the lack of background work supporting the product being marketed, not from any personal knowledge of the promoter.
(Wow – thanks for a comment that’s both intelligent and polite. That’s rare on the Internet.)
When fitness people put down my engineering background and say can’t possibly know fitness without a fitness degree, I reply that certainly someone with a Duke Engineering degree has the intelligence to figure out what books to read, actually read them, then master that information over the course of 28 years in the industry.
Certainly I have the intelligence to do that as well as your standard “Fitness Technology” major.
Likewise …
I blame myself for trying to sway the forum writers with the sheer number of Dr. Summers’ patents. The truly pertinent patent (that’s hard to say!) you need to look at is the top one: 7,074,812 Development of muscle mass in a mammal.
Actually, if you take at the number assigned to each patent, you’ll notice that the stent work came earlier and the patent that led to Endothil CR (that, in turn, led to Stemulite) came last.
It’s not a big jump to guess that someone intelligent enough to invent a stent can move on to discover a “natural stent,” that is, a way to get the body to create new blood vessels own its own.
Dr. Summers worked with researchers at Stanford who later discovered that “natural stent” could be created by nicotine.
Dr. Summers then theorized this process could work to regenerate any injured or damaged cells – including muscle cells microdamaged (my spellchecker is trying to tell me I just invented that a word?) by weight training. He also discovered tomato extract and eggplant extract could produce the same effect as nicotine.
Before Metabolic Research, Inc. (the company that makes Stemulite), Dr. Summers founded a company called Endovasc.
Here’s a press release explaining more about Endovasc which at least indicates more about Dr. Summers’ expertise in biochemistry …
(I’ve excerpted the final paragraph here for your convenience:)
Endovasc Ltd., Inc., established in 1996 [again, by Dr. Summers], is a biotechnology company focused in the area of cardiovascular disease, pioneering drug delivery technology designed to deliver and release drugs to their intended targets in an efficient and controlled manner. The company’s pipeline of products and processes include: Liprostin(TM), ANGIOGENIX(TM), PROStent(TM) stent-coating technology, and a biodegradable stent prosthesis.
Endovasc Ltd, Inc. – a biotechnology firm with two cardiovascular drugs approved for FDA Phase III trials, announced today that it has signed a Letter of Intent with XM International d/b/a Basic Research, Inc. to start a stem cell recruitment study using Angiogenix(TM) for accelerating muscle tissue rebuilding after long term disability.
“To commence our recently announced $2,500,000/royalty joint venture with Basic Research (Salt Lake City, Utah), Endovasc is starting a pilot experiment to study the recruitment and mobilization of stem cells using Angiogenix in rehabilitation regimens directed toward recovery after accidents, stokes, or broken limbs that have atrophied due to body cast, hospitalization and long term lack of exercise or physical activity.
“We will be excited to see the results of this study, which will focus solely on the potential that Angiogenix may have on stem cell recruitment and mobilization. In past studies we have determined the angiogenic effect of Angiogenix. With this study, we will look for regeneration of muscle tissue using one’s own stem cells,” said Endovasc Chairman and CEO, Dr. David Summers.
“A nutracutical supplement that helps to reduce the recovery period using the body own stem cell system could greatly speed rehabilitation of thousands of victims of such misfortunes would be a marvelous breakthrough, saving millions of dollars in lost work time.”
Endovasc’s products include Angiogenix(TM), the revolutionary new treatment that has shown to stimulate angiogenesis and recruit the body’s own stem cells that help grow new heart vessels predicted to relieve chest pain and improve heart function; Liprostin(TM), a liposomal prostaglandin-based treatment that studies suggest will prevent restenosis (re-blockage of arteries), increase circulation, and reduce leg pain due to poor blood flow; biodegradable stents, drug-delivery stents and newly discovered nutraceutical applications that may accelerate development of muscle mass.
Other nutraceuticals are being developed to and treat obesity in overweight diabetic women. Endovasc believes that its nutriceutical prostaglandin balancers and nutraceuticals that may therapeutically stimulate the body’s own stem cells combined with high protein/amino acid complexes could become blockbuster nonprescription products, producing positive cash flow even sooner than its later stage drugs because they are not subject to the FDA approval process.

Remember, there’s only one place where you can buy Stemulite.
