I picked this up from The Independent from Anderson, SC (See how hard I have to work to find pertinent personal training articles for you?)
This was so “to-the-point” that I took the liberty of reprinting the whole thing for you. So, sue me. (Okay, not really.)
. . . . . . .
Your Personal Trainer: John DeFendis John DeFendis
Dear Mr. DeFendis: I am 5 feet 6 and weigh 223 pounds. I would like to lose 50 pounds but have been having a hard time getting results.
For the past three months I have been walking 45 minutes a day and I try not to eat a lot of calories, but have only lost four pounds.
My friend suggested that I hire a personal trainer but I don’t feel I need one, since I am motivated to lose the weight on my own. – LINDA
Dear Linda: The most critical term you used was that you are motivated.
Motivation is great, a much needed element for success. Unfortunately, motivation alone will not allow us to achieve our fitness goals.
Getting in shape has many facets and although everyone wants to believe they can get in great shape with little or no help, it just doesn’t happen often.
When I was younger, I trained and competed and failed miserably in creating the body I wanted.
Finally I hired two personal trainers – one to handle my training and nutritional program and one to direct me through challenging workouts.
Those two people have been with me for 34 years now and although they no longer train me, they are important people in my life and they are the ones responsible for my success.
They enriched my life with the knowledge I use today to help people become healthier and look great.
What does a qualified personal trainer do to help people get in shape? I call it the TEAM concept:
Training
Your professional personal trainer will challenge you to reach your goals with structured one-on-one workouts. You’ll begin with a conservative workout and graduate to more intensive workouts as you progress.
Education
Your personal trainer will educate you on nutrition, proper exercise form, techniques such as supersets, 12/12s, drop sets, training cycles, when to increase the weight and how to isolate and strengthen individual muscles to prevent injuries. This education will also include individual specifics tailored to you.
Accountability
A successful trainer always teaches commitment. Workouts are scheduled to insure maximum progress in minimal time.By holding the client accountable for showing up for workouts and sticking to the nutritional program, the trainer guarantees results.
Motivation
Every once in awhile we all need to be pushed, motivated, driven. A trainer teaches you to focus on your goal, reach that goal and set new goals. The trainer will motivate you by showing you the progress you’re making in fat loss, increasing strength, stamina and flexibility and re-shaping your body.
Walking is good, but it is not going to help you lose weight and reach your goal. Strength training and a good nutrition plan will.
So please allow a personal trainer the opportunity to help you lose that 50 pounds.
