“That was a great workout”

by Stephen Holt, Stemulite Fitness Pro

It humors me when I hear people say that to their trainers. What exactly does that mean?

In many cases it means, “I feel sore and tired.”

Contrary to popular opinion, “sore and tired” not only does not imply a productive workout, it sometimes means it was an unproductive workout.

There’s a fine line between “appropriately challenging” and so much work that you have difficulty recovering. And if you can’t recover, you can’t improve.

Feeling sore should be an occasional occurrence resulting from barely crossing that line. Soreness should NOT be the goal of your workout.
